DRBFM (Design Review Based on Failure Modes): A method for success

Design Review Based on Failure Modes (DRBFM) is a creativity method that accompanies the development process. It is also a philosophy of discourse-oriented design development and design evaluation.

SCIO™-DRBFM (Design Review Based On Failure Mode) is a new method designed to accompany the development process that is being used more and more in industry. The goal of DRBFM is to make change management an integral part of the development process. Product changes, new customer requirements, changes to the specification, and changes to the application have led to massive problems and product recalls in the past. DRBFM provides a systematic examination of changes to products and a creative discussion method so that change processes can be successfully brought under control using teamwork.

Main Features and Functions

Promoting creativity

  • Creative working methods include brainstorming and teamwork.
  • For the most part, the DRBFM template can be filled in as desired; photos and images are integrated directly into the text.
How it works
  • DRBFM ensures that changes are not examined in an isolated manner, and instead ensures that interactions in the system and in the product are systematically and fully taken into account.
  • The DRBFM method reliably, systematically and creatively guides the design engineer throughout all phases of a change process.
  • The distribution of tasks between the design engineer and the review team leads to effective implementation of changes while simultaneously checking and releasing the results.
  • The project leader always has an overview of the status of all changes in the project that quickly shows him or her if they have been solved, rejected, or are critical.
Using FMEA knowledge
  • Existing FMEA data is used as the basis for the DRBFM.
  • The database supplies catalogs and suggestions from known analyses.
Generating FMEA data
  • Knowledge from the DRBFM analysis is selected and transferred to a specific, existing FMEA when this knowledge is valuable for an expanded risk analysis or when required for documentation purposes.
Communicating changes
  • One status variable is set to activate messaging for systems / products.
  • The review team is automatically informed of every change to a specification, function, or configuration.
  • The entire change management is displayed using an SCIO-Block-Diagram. The processing status is also color-coded in the block diagram.
