Information processing is developing just as swiftly as the resulting flow of information. New computer platforms, networked computer architectures, relational databases, telecommunication, and intranet and Internet technologies have greatly improved capabilities for developing, recording, translating, and transmitting information. Nonetheless, only 10% of a company’s relevant information is stored in a structured way in databases. The remaining 90% of information is contained in unstructured documents such as paper, faxes, and e-mails that provide temporary support for working processes and are not centrally managed.
